About Ashoka

Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs — men and women with system changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social problems.

Since 1981, Ashoka has elected almost 3,000 leading social entrepreneurs as Ashoka Fellows, providing them with living stipends, professional support, and access to a global network of peers in 70 countries.

Ashoka Fellows inspire others to adopt and spread their innovations — demonstrating to all citizens that they too have the potential to be powerful changemakers and make a positive difference in their communities. By unleashing the same innovative and entrepreneurial mindset which has driven business sector growth over the last two centuries, Ashoka is leading a dramatic transformation in society, fueling the citizen sector’s unprecedented growth. With our global community of social entrepreneurs, Ashoka develops models for collaboration and designs infrastructure needed for this growth in an effort to create an Everyone a Changemaker world, a world in which all individuals have the confidence and support to creatively address the challenges around them.

Ashoka, at the center of this network, has gained a deep understanding of the key strategies needed. Today we are able to convene global partners and leading social entrepreneurs around historic opportunities, thus ensuring that system-change solutions take root and transform their respective fields. Ashoka Southern Africa

Ashoka’s Southern Africa program was launched in 1990 as the cornerstone of Ashoka’s work in Africa. Our first and longest running program in Africa to date gathers more than 130 Fellows - the largest Ashoka fellowship in the continent - from Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Our office has a firm footing in the region and is well poised to continue building communities of innovators and fostering social change. We have been driving a new vision for the citizen sector in Africa by identifying and investing in local social entrepreneurs with new ideas for systematic social change. These innovators are elected as Ashoka Fellows, given financial and professional support, and gain access to a global network of like-minded peers. In 17 countries across Africa, since 1990, Ashoka has supported over 360 social entrepreneurs through our offices in West, East and Southern Africa.

Ashoka Fellows in Africa are empowering people to create their own economic and civic opportunities, addressing the pandemic of HIV/AIDS and other health concerns, introducing more effective education systems, struggling for the advancement of human rights, protecting the environment and natural resources, and resolving conflict. Ashoka believes that building a critical mass of groundbreaking social entrepreneurs is an important step toward creating a vibrant, prosperous African continent.
